The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs, each approximately the size of a fist. They are located in the abdominal cavity on either side of your spine halfway down your back. Most people have two kidneys, but some have only one, or only one that works. If the one kidney continues to function well, the person might never be aware that there is only one working kidney.
